Face of the Day — featuring one eyeshadow

I’ve included an eye look in this face of the day post. I’m quite simple (and lazy) when it comes to eye looks, unless I have somewhere to be, lol. I know that using one eyeshadow may not seem like anything special, but it’s a good trick to know for a rainy day. When you’re in a pinch or in a hurry, and you find it necessary to put in some effort for your eye look, using one shadow can really help.

It’s quite simple: you apply a wash of your singular color of choice and then blend. Blend to sheer it out. Then, apply the same color to the outer corners of your eyes to add depth and some dimension. Blend. Add more of the same color into the same place. Blend.

For my face, I’m using the Chanel UV Essentiel Complete Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 as my sunscreen/base, but I’m finding that it’s kinda oily for my liking. That’s why I paired it with powder foundation for a bit of oil control. Since finishing the Chantecaille Compact Makeup Foundation in “Petal,” I’ve re-purchased it in “Shell” and still love it. “Shell” is not pink-toned like “Petal,” and it adjusts well to the skin. It’s still one of my all time favorites — even though it’s stupidly expensive.

For blush, I’m STILL obsessed with my Illamasqua Cream Blusher in “Promise.” Enough said, lol. For some minor contouring of the nose, I’ve come back to the Benefit Hoola Bronzer because it’s warm for my pale skin tone.

Here are my eye products. I’m still using the same KOJI eyelash curler with my Shiseido Mascara Base and new MJ mascara. I’ve been using the clear Maybelline Great Lash Mascara to run through my brows. I’m really liking it for the brows after using brow powder, mainly because it’s less sticky and hairspray-like. The finish is very soft and natural. Because it’s clear and my powder brow products are dark brown, I assume this will get dingy and dirty looking really quick. Good thing it’s just a few bucks!

The “one eyeshadow look” is featured in this post using the Laura Mercier eyeshadow in “Bamboo.” In a previous post some time ago, I wrote about Top Neutral Eyeshadows to Own and mentioned this very shadow. As you can see, it’s still one of my favorites for sure.

I’ve also been playing with the Anastasia Brow Powder Duo in dark brown. The packaging has changed and so has the amount of product. I like it, but to me, it’s just like my other eyebrow powders.

The “one eyeshadow look” is literally that — I’ve only applied on eyeshadow, but layered it so that it looks dimensional. :) While I know that this look may not be interesting/useful to others, it’s just another way to simplify. During the hotter months, nothing is worse than having all your makeup melt off your face and get streaky! Another things to keep in mind is that not all singular shadows can look good on its own. I feel that there are some colors that need a partner, so try it out and see what works best for your eye color and skin tone.

What’s In My Makeup Bag v.2

Holiday cheers! Awhile back, I wrote a post called Weekend Getaway: What’s In My Makeup Bag. This time around, it’s version 2 because I’m going back home for the holidays. Since it’s a bit more than just a weekend getaway, my packing is a bit different.

I found this cute makeup bag at Forever 21 for like, $6-$7 and couldn’t pass it up. I switched to this bag because I will packing other bags with skincare essentials, brushes, and cleansing essentials. On top of that, I will also be bringing hair care, body care, and random styling products since I will be at home for a few weeks.

An opportunity that I like to take advantage of when I go back home is to FINALLY use up products. I say this because it feels like I’m intentionally “restricting” myself. I don’t like to overpack – even though all this seems excessive, lol, and I only bring what I know I’m going to use, because I try to avoid the “what if” situations. It’s generally a good time for me to bring items that are almost done so I can finish them up. Also, much like my weekend getaway bag, I can’t be bothered to be testing products, so I bring my trusted products only – I don’t want to be frustrated and stuck with a product I don’t like or have to deal with a product that breaks me out.

A quick peek inside!

As you can see, this bag may look small, but it sure does hold a bunch of stuff! It’s just the right size – that way, it’s not too big that I over-stuff it; and, it’s not so small I feel insecure about bringing too little, lol. And, when I’m back at home shopping is just much better. So chances are, I’ll end up buying a thing or two while away and end up using that too!

For the eye makeup portion, I’m just bringing my Z palette with some of my trusty eyeshadows and MAC’s eyeliner in “Teddy.” I will post a more in-depth color review/swatch in another post regarding my top, favorite MAC eyeshadows. But for traveling purposes, I need something versatile, compact, and easy to carry. Also, this way, if I end up purchasing something new, I’d have room to bring it back (or enjoy it while away).

As always, thanks for reading. Are any of you guys going back home for the holidays? What are you bringing?

Current Favorites – What I’m Loving Lately

I’ve been loving a lot of my newly discovered products lately; but, some of the products mentioned in today’s posts are products that have remained staple items in my collection.

As always, face products are on a constant rotation. However, the Chantecaille Future Skin Oil-Free Gel Foundation is still in my #1 winner’s spot.

Normally in the mornings, my mind is debating which foundation to use, and much of this thought process is dependent upon what my day is going to be like/where I’m going to be. With the Future Skin foundation, it’s my trusty automatic go-to product – it’s my favorite right now and forever – unless that’s just too dramatic. :) It’s the perfect blend between the dewy look and semi-matte look. LOVE.

I’ve noticed that I’m still loving the wear-time of this foundation. It doesn’t wear off or melt away as I’ve previously read in reviews. Even with the growing humidity in Texas, I haven’t noticed any difficulties wearing this foundation. Also, my shade – “Alabaster” – is the best color match I’ve ever experienced in a foundation. I realize this is not the case for many since the color selection in Chantecaille’s range is so limited. I should remind you that the foundation is made in Japan, and perhaps I love this foundation because I’ve had a long, long love affair with Japanese foundations. Either way, if you get a chance to give this product a try – DO IT.

Along with the Future Skin foundation, I’m obsessed with my Chanel luminous bronzing powder in #907 Sable Beige, MAC blush in “Pink Tea,” and setting everything very lightly with the Laura Mercier mineral powder in “Soft Porcelain.” A few weeks ago, I skipped powdering my t-zone because I didn’t really need to. Unfortunately, the Texas heat is coming on strong now since we’re heading into the summer months with full force. ICK.

Lazy days – like Sundays – require minimal effort for getting ready. Because I reserve Sundays for my face mask and bubble bath routine, I try to allow my skin to take the day off from makeup. On days like this, I quickly dab on my Clé de Peau concealer in “Ivory” and dust a light layer of Laura Mercier mineral powder in “Soft Porcelain.” If I’m in the mood, I’ll add some blush to give my skin some life. But most of the time, I skip it because I’m feeling lazy.

Eye makeup has remained basic but I’ve been “shopping my stash” lately. I’ve re-discovered my past favorite MAC eyeshadow in “Hypnotizing” and paired it with my long-time favorite shade in “Handwritten.” I still curl my lashes with my KOJI lash curler and use my Shiseido mascara base with my trusty majolica majorca expander frame plus mascara.

I’ve been skipping liner and anything else complicated. I have added something new – which is the MAC brow set. As a mascara for the brows, it’s easy to use this on days when you don’t want to meticulously draw in/pencil in/shade in your brows. A few quick swipes and you’re good to go – I use the shade “Beguile” which is a dark brown shade.

Favorite lip products as of late includes an oldie but goodie – the Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector 01, which is a light pink shade that’s glossy and moisturizing (and non-sticky). When I’m wanting a bit of color on the lips, I’ve been reaching for my MAC lipstick in the shade “Lovelorn.”

What are your current products?

EOTD: Eye of the Day

Happy Sunday, all. I hope your weekend was as eventful as mine! And, as always, a weekend isn’t a weekend without some shopping. Anyone get aynthing good that they would recommend?

It’s been highly requested that I demonstrate how some of my favorite products are used. As I’ve previously stated in other posts, I’m a neutral-colors gal so many of my eye/makeup looks aren’t exciting with fun colors, shimmers, and false lashes. Because of the atmosphere I work in, I try to keep everything I wear (clothes, makeup) on a very low-key yet sophisticated level. Some of you have asked where I like to shop for clothes – and, I’d have to say that I enjoy Banana Republic, Gap, Nordstrom, and Nordstrom Rack the most. The biggest tip I can give you is to hit up outlets and sales often, and to become a ‘member’ at these stores because you save SO much more that way. Also, you’re able to participate in member-exclusive deals and events.

Another thing to keep in mind is to know where to invest properly, because some key items in your closet are worth shelling out money for because of the quality and longevity. Some items to keep in mind that are worth investing in are black slacks, dark denim jeans, a coat, a blazer, and black leather pumps. Aside from these items, everything else can be purchased for less pretty much wherever, depending on your taste and preference.

Anyway, back to the EYE OF THE DAY – featuring my favorite Burberry eyeshadow (that’s been previously reviewed).

1. “Pale Barley” eyeshadow by Burberry
2. Shiseido mascara base
3. Majorilca Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus mascara (Japan)
4. L’Oreal Voluminous mascara in “Carbon Black”
5. MAC 217 brush (blending)
6. MAC 263 brush (angled brush – brows)
7. MAC “Charcoal Brown” matte eyeshadow
8. KOJI No. 73 eyelash curler (Japan)

Eyebrows: I used MAC “Charcoal Brown” eyeshadow and the MAC 263 angled brush to fill in my brows. This seems to be a versatile color for brows because I know various people who use this color who range in skin tone, hair color, and ethnicities. I prefer a dark, warm brown color for my brows since I don’t have stark black hair naturally.

Eyelids: No primer – just “Pale Barley” applied onto my lids using the sponge tip applicator (which, by the way, is superb for applying a solid layer of color). Then, I take “Charcoal Brown” again and add to the crease of my eyes and blend it with the MAC 217. Essentially, this is just for some mild definition. Also, “Charcoal Brown” is added to my lower lashline as well.

Eyelashes: I curl my lashes using my KOJI curler and apply Shiseido’s mascara base. I follow that with my trusty (and super water proof) Majorilca Majorca mascara to hold my lashes up in its curl. After a few minutes of working on other areas of my face, I come back to my lashes and apply L’Oreal Voluminous mascara on top of everything for volume and thickness.

As always, thanks for reading.
